The use of scientific models and modeling in science education has shown to enhance student cognitive gains and reasoning abilities. It is an authentic science practice that is recommended for use in numerous countries by the OECD. This talk will review models and modeling in science in general as well as what is known about how the pedagogy affects student learning. This knowledge will springboard the discussion towards what is known about teacher use and knowledge of this authentic practice in science in three countries: Kazakhstan, Turkey and the US. The talk will end with suggestions to actively engage students in this authentic science education practice at all educational levels.
