The Linguistic landscape of Astana, the new capital city of Kazakhstan

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

The language of the city, which is regarded as a kind of interconnection of different languages and linguistic components, is the subject of the fundamental research in modern linguistics. This paper analyzes the texts of the signboards of the city of Astana as a special speech genre. Analysis of the linguistic landscape of the city serves as a feedback in the implementation of language policy. Thus, my analysis also addresses the language situation that has developed since the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

I view the signage as a special speech genre, which is a written text in small form, a primitive text, performing the functions of identification and advertising. The texts on the signboards are of scientific interest as a fragment of the communicative space of the city. They reflect and form the linguistic and cultural space of a modern city, therefore, management of their shape is connected with linguistic and ecological problems, and language policy of the country.
