After finishing his Diploma in Biology at the University of Cologne, Germany, Dr Riethmacher did a PhD at the Max Planck Institute in Cologne. Dr Riethmacher then went to do a Post-doctoral at the Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany, one of the finest institutes for medically relevant research in Germany. From there Dr Riethmacher moved on to his first independent position at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology (ZMNH) in Hamburg, Germany. His research there was mainly centred on the development and maintenance of the nervous system but he also led research on other topics like the development of new tools for modelling disease in mice and cancer. In 2005 he habilitated in Neurobiology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg. Dr Riethmacher then accepted an offer to join the University of Southampton, UK, as an Associate Professor. His projects there were a continuation of neuro-scientific research including regeneration but also expanded into other areas like immunology, lung and liver disease, cancer and sex determination. During all this time he attracted grant money and supervised and guided numerous PhD students and Post-doctoral. His over 40 peer-reviewed articles have been published in high impact factor journals including Nature (5x), Cell (1x), Genes & Development (5x), Immunity (2x), Hepatology (2x), PNAS (4x) and Journal of Experimental Medicine (2x). In Southampton, besides teaching he was also managing the scientific projects of medical students. Since 2013 he was also involved in establishing the BMEU curriculum for medical students, a joint programme between the Medical Faculty of the University of Southampton and the Kassel School of Medicine (KSM).
