Professional Information

An historian of medicine and public health, Elliott Bowen received his PhD from Binghamton University in 2013. His forthcoming book–entitled In Search of Sexual Health: Diagnosing and Treating Syphilis in Hot Springs, Arkansas, 1890-1940 (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2020)–examines the relationship between clinical practice, health-seeking, and sexually-transmitted diseases in the early twentieth-century United States. Upon completion of this project, Bowen plans to conduct additional research exploring the connections between medicine and sexuality across a wide variety of 19th and 20th century contexts.

Since coming to Nazarbayev University in August, 2016, Bowen has taught courses on numerous topics related to his research, including “Introduction to the History of Medicine,” “Public Health, Society, and the State,” “History of Medical Ethics,” “AIDS and Society,” “History of Sexuality,” and a two-semester introductory survey on US History. In the future, he looks forward to working with colleagues interested in building up the university’s offerings in the emerging, interdisciplinary field that is medical humanities.
