Hashim Ali is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence, Nazarbayev University. His research focuses on edge intelligence and embedded sensing for healthcare and safety-critical applications. He develops computational-intelligence methods that integrate embedded systems, Internet-of-Things infrastructure, physiological sensing, and interpretable machine learning.
His current research includes multimodal intensive-care analysis, EEG-based emotion and drowsiness recognition, clinical decision support, graph neural networks, and resource-efficient AI for edge devices. His work combines algorithm development with system-level considerations such as computational efficiency, latency, interpretability, and deployment constraints.
Dr Ali received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca and his MSc in Engineering of Computing Systems from Politecnico di Milano. His experience spans academic research, university teaching, graduate supervision, and industrial development of embedded and sensor-network systems in Italy, Pakistan, Norway, and Kazakhstan.
At Nazarbayev University, he teaches and develops courses in intelligent systems, computer systems, programming, and research methods. He is an Academic Editor for PLOS ONE, an IEEE Senior Member, and a co-supervisor in the Applications of Signal Processing Laboratory. His broader goal is to develop trustworthy and resource-efficient intelligent systems that translate sensing and data into useful decisions in healthcare and other safety-critical environments.
