    Personal profile

I am an Associate Professor in STEM/STEAM education in the Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University.  I previously was working in the United States as an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University and a fellow at the National Science Foundation.

I am and have been the PI of a number of funded projects both in the US and Kazakhstan.  Many of these projects focus on the implementation of authentic STEM/STEAM practices in both primary and secondary schools.  These practices include constructivist approaches to teaching, argumentation and student discourse, dramatic inquiry, models and modelling as well as engineering design practices.  The implemented instructional materials are integrated across multiple disciplines.

My research also addresses teacher education and how to scaffold teachers in the use of engaging pedagogies via classroom observations, teacher workshops, and higher education courses included blended learning.

My philosophy of teaching is that in order for my students to grow as practitioners of education they must construct their own understanding of the concepts covered in my courses.  This means that my classes are places where students practice mean-making.  Thus, they are constructivist in nature.  They are constantly asked to not only learn theory but also to apply this theory to practice.  My teaching significantly overlaps with my research interests.
