Dr. Saffet Yagiz is an Associate Professor in Mining Engineering Department in the Nazarbayev University School of Mining and Geosciences. Dr. Saffet Yagiz holds an MSc degree from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (1997) and a PhD degree from Colorado School of Mines (CSM, 2002) in the USA. His main research interests are engineering rock mechanics; mechanized rock excavation and tunneling; rock mass characteristics and testing; performance analysis of mechanical excavators; geo-technical site investigation and drilling. He has authored over 125 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, proceedings, reports, and books. He is a recognized reviewer of many mining & geotechnical engineering journals and Associate Editor of Tunneling and Underground Space Technology. Further, he has been participating in many conferences and scientific meetings as organizer, session chair, invited speaker, scientific committee member, speaker, or participant. Dr. Saffet Yagiz is a recognized academician with over 20 years’ experience in teaching, research, and consultancy. He has a broad spectrum of engineering rock mechanics and mechanized excavation and has played leadership roles within this spectrum via valuable publications and reports. He has been involved as a principal investigator or researcher in many research projects related to his specialty. He is known for the studies of developing the Modified CSM Model for TBM performance, TBM performance prediction formulas, and proposing rock brittleness index and classification for rock mechanics and excavation. He is a working group member of ISRM suggested method for determining rock bore ability and ISRM Suggested Method for Small-Scale Linear Rock Cutting Test. He is a professional member of the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM).
