Project Description

This project is a collaborative research proposition among Nazarbayev University and Satbayev University in Kazakhstan, and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in Germany. The first objective of this project is the discovery of a copper porphyry mine tailing storage facility (TSF) in Kazakhstan that is a serious environmental hazard; and the second objective focuses on prospective valorization or re-processing of the TSF sought, targeting the potential recovery of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) and environmental remediation.
In order to achieve the above objectives, four main work packages are defined:
• WP#1: Targeting the most environmentally hazardous copper porphyry TSF in Kazakhstan
For the selected TSF
• WP#2: Mineral resource assessment of the CRMs
• WP#3: Techno-economic assessment for valorization and re-processing
• WP#4: Geoenvironmental characterization and remediation
