Project Description

The goal of the project is to describe the epidemiology of NCDs in children using the aggregation, validation and use of large-scale pediatric administrative health data, using electronic health records and an innovative analytical approach.

Project Relevance

Under-5 mortality rates worldwide have declined as a result of targeted efforts to reduce under-5 mortality by combating communicable diseases, reducing malnutrition and improving maternal health. However, trends towards the spread of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing. More than 1 million children died from NCDs in 2017 (3). Early prevention of NCDs and their complications requires sustained efforts to prevent disease and improve the quality of life and survival of children. One of the most significant gaps for NCDs and children is the lack of surveillance and monitoring for these age groups.

Project Impact

The proposed project is expected to describe the prevalence, morbidity and mortality from all causes of the following NCDs: cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disorders, mental disorders and diabetes in children in Kazakhstan using national health administrative data collected since 2013.
