The aim of this project is to establish the chemical identity and physiological function of two novel post-translational modifications of DJ-1, a protein implicated in the early onset of Parkinson's disease. Post-translational modifications will be studied by combination of mass-spectrometry, protein X-ray crystallography and various biochemical assays. The project holds the potential to discover the molecular function of DJ-1 and directly link it to the etiology of Parkinson's disease, suggesting possible novel therapeutic interventions for the disease.
