Project Description

What is the role of the university in society? What purpose do universities serve in local, national, regional and global development, including achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? What purpose could they serve? What are university leaders doing in this respect, and what more do they think could be done? These are some of the questions underpinning this project. The overall aim of the project is to examine why and how university leaders in Kazakhstan engage with the social responsibility purpose and role of their institutions within their local, national, regional and global communities. In this section, we will explain (a) the theoretical and social/political background of the project, with reference to previous research, (b) the research focus and research questions guiding the study, (c) the novelty/originality of the project, and (d) the expected significance and impact of the project.
