Abstract

This study empirically examines the relationship between gendered events in Korean society and individuals’ feminist identity formation, based on existing theories on feminist identity development. In particular, we hypothesize that the pattern of connecting gendered events to feminist identity should differ by gender and generation. The results of the survey conducted in 2020 indicate that there is a significant gender gap in feminist identity, with younger generations exhibiting a stronger gender gap than older age groups. Secondly, the relationship between gendered events and feminist identity is contingent upon the nature of the event in question. Thirdly, the impact of gendered events on feminist identity is more pronounced among younger individuals and women. Finally, the gender differences observed in the relationship between events and identity demonstrate varying patterns across generations. These findings highlight the necessity for research that not only identifies generational differences in the definition and perception of feminism, but also considers significant generational differences in the impact of social issues on feminism.
