Abstract

The authors of this chapter focus on relations within the Naqshbandi Mujaddidi brotherhood between Kazakhstan and Russia. To better understand the rules of polite behaviour and the forms of interaction between the sheikh and the murids but also among the murids themselves, they employ the concept of sociability. This concept further allows some insights into the consolidation of the brotherhood and the gradual transformation of the sheikh’s disciples. Simply by scrutinising how murids relate to one another, we can learn much that is being neglected by approaches that primarily engage with power and control.
