Calculations of the concentration field of a turbulent methane jet

Abstract

Calculations of the concentration parameters in a turbulent methane jet, prior to ignition, have been made and compared with measurements. The round free jet is isothermal, the methane is considered passive, and the mean and fluctuating levels of scalar concentration are calculated. A differential Reynolds stress and scalar flux closure has been adopted to model the turbulent transport of concentration and momentum in the jet. Included in the Reynolds stress transport closure is a modelled transport equation for the intermittency factor. Modelled transport equations are solved for the turbulent stresses and concentration fluxes, the turbulence energy dissipation rate, and the mean square concentration fluctuations. Calculations of a turbulent methane jet have been made, and the results compare favorably with existing experimental data.
