N2 - The paper introduces the research efforts of an ongoing project in\nintelligent product process design. A new unified class of Petri nets\ncalled OOIPNs (object oriented intelligent Petri nets) is defined based\non the basic place transition Petri nets, hybrid intelligent systems\n(HIS), distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) and object oriented\napproach, and used for the representation and integration of distributed\nknowledge sources. An application framework which uses the OOIPNs\napproach has been developed for the concurrent intelligent design and\nassembly planning. With this framework, a unified, knowledge and\ncomputation based integrated intelligent system for the modelling of\nproduct design and its assembling processes, especially the hybrid and\ndynamic knowledge exchange among intelligent agents can be achieved.\nThus, product design and assembly planning can be carried out\nsimultaneously and intelligently in an entirely computer aided\nconcurrent design environment
