The terminal settling velocity (ut) of spherical particles was studied in cylindrical columns in the range of Reynolds numbers (Re) 2≤Ret∞≤185 and of particle-to-column diameter ratios (λ) about 0.1 to 0.9. Since none of the existing equations satisfactorily related the ut to the λ, two new relationships for the wall factor ut/ut∞ were developed. The first correlation, where both adapting parameters, λ0 and p, are expressed as a function of Ret∞, gave the best agreement between calculated and experimental results. The simplified correlation, where λ0 is expressed as a function of Ret∞ and p is fixed as p = 2.2, also gave good agreement with experimental results but had lower accuracy.
