Abstract

Rural schools are an important part of Kazakhstan’s educational system, providing
education to the majority of children in the country. The role of teachers is pivotal
in ensuring quality education in rural schools. Therefore, this study aimed to explore
the opportunities and challenges encountered by rural school teachers in Kazakhstan.
The study employed a mixed-method research design involving both quantitative and
qualitative methods. However, the data presented in this chapter were collected only
through the qualitative method. Specifically, semi-structured interviews and focus
group discussions were held with rural teachers, school leaders, and students from different regions in the east, west, and south of the country. Professional development, financial incentives, and the opportunity to make a difference were perceived as the main drivers for teachers to work in rural schools, whereas excessive workload, poor infrastructure, and limited resources were considered the main challenges encountered by rural teachers.
