Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in working in the academe after retirement. This study determined the relationship between the functional capacity (physical and mental capacities) of working retirees and their job competence. A method with a descriptive design was used to investigate this relationship. One hundred and two working retirees were interviewed in 11 public and 17 private higher education institutions in Eastern Philippines. Cross-tabulation analysis, specifically Somers’ D, was used to determine the relationship between physical and mental functioning and job competence. Working retirees have satisfactory job competence and high physical and mental capacities. There is an association between the physical and mental functioning of working retirees and their job competence. Maintaining physical and mental capacities is crucial in providing high-quality work performance even after retirement. Effective human resources management strategies for maintaining health and well-being are greatly needed to achieve high-quality job outcomes.
