Abstract

General Directorate of Highways has planned constructing a ring road around Denizli city for intercity transportation. Denizli Municipality has also planned new settlement areas at the two sides of the ring road 500 m far from the road axis. In this study, a gelogical and geotechnical study was carried out for the site selection for urban planning along Denizli ring road axis. General gelogy and tectonics of the study are was studied. 15 number of soil bore holes were drilled, 22 surveying pitches were opened for geotechnical investigation, in–situ testing and sampling. Measuements of seismic wave velocity of soils was carried out by means of an engineering seimograph. P and S wave velocities and amplifications of soils were determined. P wave velocity (Vp) changes between 296 m/s and 590 m/s, S wave velocity (Vs) 203 m/s and 464 m/s, soil amplification (A) changes between 1.71 and 2.81. Groundwater level rises to 0.6m from the ground surface at the South of the study area. In this area, the factor of safety against liquefaction is less than 1. In the middle and western part of the study area, groundwater does not exist within the boreholes. Slope failures likely to occur under the influences of pore pressure and dynamic forces at the areas where slope angle is high.
