Geomechanical and industrial aspects of natural stones quarried in Denizli Surroundings (in Turkish with English abstract)

Abstract

Geomechanical properties of natural stones are crucial when they used as buildings and construction material. Due to that, assessing the physical and mechanical properties of natural stone is inevitable from the scope of their quality evaluation. Natural stone extracted in Denizli surroundings composed of very important part of Turkish stone sectors. Variety of colored and textured natural stones including travertine, schist, dolomite, and gypsum are extracted and operated in the area. In this study, physic-mechanical properties and quality of natural stone extracted in the area have been investigated by conducting laboratory studies. Four types of travertine, two schist, dolomitic limestone and gypsum extracted in Kızılyer investigated in laboratory conditions according to their porosity, dry and saturated unit weight, water absorption, uniaxial compressive strength, sonic velocity, elasticity modules, slake durability index and petrography properties. Obtained results are evaluated and classified from the scope of usability of natural stone as construction materials. As result, there is no constrains to use natural stones extracted in the area as construction material, however, those natural stones have to be chosen according to the purpose of their usage and climate condition.
