In chloroplasts isolated in tris HCl buffer in the presence of 0·1 m NaCl and in the absence of salts an asymmetrical EPR spectrum of Mn2+ was observed differing in form from the EPR spectrum of the hydrated Mn2+ ion usually observed in the chloroplasts treated with ultrasound reductants and 1·8 m tris HCl buffer (pH 8). The transition from the asymmetrical spectrum to the symmetrical occurs in the presence of reductants and in a number of cases is induced by light. The causes of the asymmetry of the EPR spectrum of Mn2+ in the chloroplasts are discussed.
