In this exploratory study we attempt to draw parallels between so called dimensions of Big Data (i.e. Volume, Veracity, Variety, Velocity, or 4V-s) and various aspects of machine translation. For this purpose we set up a number of experiments that in our opinion help to relate machine translation to Big Data. In addition to the experiments, which are rather compact and, frankly, pale in comparison to industry level Big Data applications, we discuss possible scenarios where some of the aspects of machine translation fit firmly in the Big Data realm. This work, however, is not meant to be any sort of guidance on Big Data, machine translation, or a combination of both; the reader is advised to treat the material as an opinion piece.
