Two novel compact orientation independent (OI) chipless RFID tag designs have been proposed in this paper. In these designs, the variation in the length of the L-resonators generate distinct resonant frequencies for encoding of data. These tags are single sided with no ground plane and can be read from behind or front by a reader having a linear polarization. In one of the designs, the L-resonators have been placed in cascaded fashion and this in turn leads to reduced size of the tag but with increased the mutual coupling. The second design has alternate L-resonators in cascade and this reduces mutual coupling and improves printing tolerance but at the cost of increased tag size. These tags occupy only 20mm×20mm and hence can be potentially used as a replacement for barcodes in items tagging and identification.
