Process modelling and model reduction for chemical engineering applications

Abstract

Process systems & models have structural and behavioural features, which can be exploited for model reduction. A reduction approach is introduced addressing both features, while systematically going through the usual model development steps. Thus, the reduction is not applied only at mathematical and numerical level, but at physical and systemic level as well. The benefit is that the model reduction is achieved while retaining the topological structure of the processand the meaning of the variables. The application of the approach is investigated for two types of processes: (a) the iso-butane alkylation process as a complex process with simple products and (b) the freezing step in ice cream manufacture as an example of simple process with complex products.
