Abstract

This research note aims to explain how the Battle of Bakhmut marked a significant strategy shift for Ukraine, which proved to be an error that allowed the Russian armed forces the time they needed to reorganize themselves and to prepare lines of defense that then proved impregnable during the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive.
