Abstract

Storytelling poetry is a type of oratory art which was established during
nomadic lifestyle of Kazakhs and developed distinctively under the Khanate
governing system. Its main genres are massive tale (epic) or Tolgau.
Storytelling is a syncretic phenomenon. It is both art and culture. The main
property of storytelling is when art of poetry, music and performance are
all in one person. Vitality of storytelling is distinguished by having its
origins in the nation’s history and ancestry examples. Art of storytelling is
demonstrated in heroic epics based on the idea of heroism and protection
of Motherland. Ancient epics with heroic spirit about tribe’s history have
passed as a heritage from one generation to another. This liability
depended on their literary texts and musical rhythm. In other words, such
epics full of heroic spirit passed through generation without changing their
literary text, musical rhythm (melody) and performance. Storytelling
culture is basically differentiated by its tribal, traditional and national
properties. Nowadays, scholars frequently use the terms “Storytelling
tradition”, “Storytelling poetry” and “Art of singing” (Zhyrshylyk). However,
their difference and interrelation are not fully investigated. In this article
we aimed to explore and comprehend that storytelling and singing are
types of art, which are related to literature and traditional continuity. In
addition, we analyzed inherent properties of the formation of the art of
storytelling and singing in Kazakh literature.
