Abstract
Leading Asian universities are playing a growing role in doctoral education, which lies at the core of much that higher education does and contributes. This chapter introduces rationales and contexts shaping doctoral education. It presents five university case studies which offer glimpses into the nature and shortcomings of progress in recent decades. A doctoral design architecture is proposed as a means for guiding development around and beyond the limitations of entrenched practices. Chapter 3 concludes with recommendations for future development.
