Abstract
In the city of Denizli surroundings, natural stone including travertine, schist and limestone have been quarried and used as building and construction stone. Besides that, variety of limestone has potential to be operated as natural stone in the area; but they have not opened yet. In this study, dolomitic limestone unit of Başçeşme Formation that outcrops in the northeast of the Denizli City between the counties of Başçeşme and Yenibağlar have been explored for evaluating their usability as construction and buildings material. For this purpose, block stone samples were collected from dolomitic limestone unit in the field. Afterward, on the prepared specimen, geo-mechanical tests including dry and saturated unit weight, effective porosity, water absorption by weight, uniaxial compressive strength, Schmidt hammer hardness, P-wave velocity, slake durability index were carried out. Consequently, the usability of dolomitic limestone as building stone was examined by using test results and petrographical analysis together with international natural stone quality standards (i.e., European Norms and ASTM Standards). Concluding remark is that dolomitic limestone unit has fractures and veins together with filling materials, and so, it is not good enough to be operated as quarry. Due to that texture and color of the stone is not homogeneous, it cannot be preferred to be used for decorating interior of the modern buildings; however, geomechanical properties of rock are suitable to be employed as building stone for outdoors and exterior of buildings.
