Abstract
A very simple model is presented for the effect of the container wall on the pressure drop in a fluid flowing through a bed of spheres. It is based on the application of the Ergun equation to the bulk region of the bed, unaffected by the wall. Pressure loss predictions are found to correspond well to the opposing trends reported in the literature for the viscous- and inertial-flow regimes.
