Project Description

The scope of M2O-DISK is to develop percutaneous and endoscopic medical devices that, simultaneously and in real time, enable fiber-optic distributed detection of four biophysical parameters:
1) Shape sensing: enable real-time 3D reconstruction of the silhouette of the medical device, which allows precision in situ tracing of the catheter/needle shape and its deformations;
2) Temperature distribution: the detection of surface/volume temperature allows precise reconstruction of local temperature, an essential task in thermotherapies and in cardiovascular diagnostic;
3) Biosensing: Novel biosensors based on Rayleigh scattering in the fiber show the potential of detecting the surrounding refractive index around the fiber, or to target specific analytes for detection;
4) Radiation: Modern approaches to radiation-based therapies (such as chemotherapies) require precise control of the radiation dose at each point of the tissues, in order to optimize the efficiency.
